What is a Makerspace?

Answer

A makerspace is a hands-on, collaborative environment designed to encourage creativity, innovation, and learning through making. It brings together tools, materials, and people to support exploration in areas such as science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM). Makerspaces provide access to equipment like 3D printers, sewing machines, electronics, and design software, empowering users to bring their ideas to life.

At South Dakota Mines, the Makerspace is located on the third floor of the Devereaux Library and is open to all students, regardless of major or experience. It offers a wide range of tools including 3D printers, soldering equipment, vinyl cutters, laser engravers, sewing machines, basic tools, pottery wheels, and kiln. The space fosters a welcoming, do-it-yourself atmosphere where students can collaborate on academic, personal, or entrepreneurial projects. Whether students are designing a prototype, working on a class assignment, or exploring a new hobby, the Makerspace provides a supportive, creative environment to learn and build. It’s purpose is tri-fold:

  • To encourage innovation and problem-solving.

  • To provide a safe, supportive environment for learning new skills.

  • To support project-based learning and STEM/STEAM education.

In essence, a makerspace is where ideas become tangible—where learning happens by doing and where students are empowered to create and innovate.
