That’s a great question.  The map is actually an engineering drawing for a railroad that ran from Rapid City to Mystic where it connected to the Burlington RR in the northern hills.  With more than 100 bridges and many turns, it was known as the “crookedest railroad in the world”.

 

The engineering drawings were done by School of Mines Professor Fred Broughton. Construction began on the rail line in 1891 and was not completed until 1906. During its existence, it operated under several names, but was most often referred to as the “Crouch Line”.

 

Broughton’s engineering drawings are not dated, but we assumed that they were completed in the late 1880s or early 1890s.
